I am excited about developing innovative tools to gain a deeper understanding of the microbial world around us,
as well as teaching and inspiring next generation scientists at different career stages.

Makenzie Bolton
Graduate Student
mb24d(at)fsu(dot)edu
I’m interested in working with micro arrays and microfluidics to sequence single cell organisms in the presence of different pathogenic bacteria. I am also interested in learning more about in lab practices and new techniques to improve overall result efficiency and quality.

I am working on developing a high-throughput method using microfluidic techniques for antimicrobial resistance genes detection. This will be useful in monitoring the temporal evolution of resistance driven by environmental factors, pollution, or the use of antibiotics. My long-term goal is to make these methods portable, affordable, and accessible for use in the field, ultimately contributing to better global monitoring and policies against antimicrobial resistance

I am a senior at FSU in biological sciences on a pre-medical track. The goal is to become an Anesthesiologist. I am interested in learning about high-throughput technologies for biological research. I am working with graduate students Makenzie and Hassan to study antibiotic discovery from environmental microbiology.

Undergraduate students
We are always looking for undergraduates interested in single cell sequencing, microbiology, and drug discovery to join the lab. If that is you, please e-mail Xiangpeng about your interest and we’ll take it from there. In the meantime, please check out our research page to get a better idea of some of the projects we’re currently working on. Also, check out some of the opportunities for undergraduate research in the department (https://www.chem.fsu.edu/research-opportunities/).
Graduate student
We are currently accepting graduate students. Please apply through the FSU chemistry and biochemistry graduate program (https://www.chem.fsu.edu/admissions/). It is essential that you list Xiangpeng as a potential advisor on your application form. This will ensure that Xiangpeng sees your application. If you also contact him ahead of time, he will know to look for your application and help you with the admissions process. In general, it is a really good idea to contact your potential advisors if you want to be successful in the admissions process.
Postdoc
If you are interested in the projects in the lab or if you have some ideas you think might be fun to work on together, let Xiangpeng know. At the very least, it would be fun to bat some ideas around, as he believes that idea grows into its better form via bouncing between different minds.
